Strikethrough Keyboard Shortcut for Mac

Apple Store

As I’ve mentioned before, I am a DaVinci type note-taker. I have notes about notes about reminders about notes.

I have notebooks full of notes, many times repeating the same reminders on several different pages.

What can I say? My mind works faster than I can capture most times. I have good ideas that float away because I can’t write them down at the moment (such as in when I’m showering).

Anyway, one thing that gives me a real sense of accomplishment is when I actually get a list of things completed. Like any sensible note-taker, I cross items off the list as they are completed.

Enter my new laptop, a Macbook Pro. I love it, love it, love it - especially now that the machine is run on an Intel chip and the OS is built on top of Unix. LOVE IT!

One tiny problem. The strikethrough font. Which, of course, is what I use to cross off items on my electronic lists!

In order to use the strikethrough style in ANY app, I have to bring up the Font dialog. Easy enough with a Keyboard shortcut, Command-T. But then, there is a drop-down for strikethrough, and then 4 different selections to chose among the style that best suits you.

Ok, this really is easy enough - but I use that function MANY times a day. At least, when I am getting a lot done. So, this many steps is a PAIN and takes me back to using Windows Vista where everything BUT strikethrough font was a pain and took way too long (which was successful in convincing me to go BACK to a Mac.)

That being said, I am so excited to have found a handy, if not geeky, solution to my problem. Yea me.

  1. System Preferences : Keybaord & Mouse
  2. Click on Keyboard Shortcuts Tab
  3. Click the + button at the bottom to create a new shortcut
  4. Select “All Applications” from the drop-down menu (if you want the shortcut to work globally on all applications on your Mac.)
  5. Name the Menu Title “Strikethrough”
  6. In the Keyboard Shortcut field, use your preferred shortcut.

Vi-O-Li-A! There we have it!

Tosh, you always come through for me and I love you for that.

: )
